The main city-forming enterprise of Kandalaksha is the Kandalaksha Aluminum Plant, located in a separate part of the city together with the microdistrict, which was built in the 1960s as a settlement of metallurgists. At that time Kirov Alley — the main recreational element and the main town-planning axis of the microdistrict — was laid.
The concept lays a comprehensive improvement of the alley with the adjacent areas:
— connection of the alley into a single recreational space (the device of elevated crosswalks in the paving with tiles);
— creating three new points of attraction: a cascade of squares, which is dedicated to the technological process of the plant and its products
— Electrolysis", "Smelting and Rolling" and "Electric Power" spaces;
— organization of free space alley under the children’s, exhibition and recreational walking area;
— Creating a pedestrian health and wellness trail throughout the community (with terrenekurs on the territory of the CDC);
— activation of vacant facilities and the creation of several investment lots with different functions;
— changing the street profile: reducing the width of the roadway, as well as speed limits to 30 km/h, marking parking and bicycle lanes, the installation of safety islands and new crosswalks.
